During the development of the Fuso class, combat experience and new fleet needs were considered, including artillery changes that simplified fire control. By the beginning of World War II, Ise had become obsolete. After Japan's carrier losses at Midway, she was rebuilt as a hybrid battleship-aircraft carrier with her rear turrets replaced by a flight deck. She fought at Cape Engaño in 1944 and was sunk by American bombers near Ondo Seto in July 1945.
